Wausau Area Mobile Meals has been delivering weekday meals since 1972 to individuals of all ages in our community who are homebound and ill, disabled and/or elderly.  Individuals can enroll in the program directly or can be referred to the program by family members, physicians, hospitals, social workers, parish nurses and the VNA. We offer an opportunity for recipients to remain in the familiar surroundings of their own homes as long as possible. In doing so, they have hopefully delayed admission to an assisted living facility or a nursing home; thereby avoiding the major expense of such a move.

We deliver all our meals with the help of volunteers.  It takes 50 volunteers a week, not including our substitute drivers, to deliver all our meals.  We are very grateful for our volunteers as our program would not exist without their dedication and commitment to a better community.  We are also especially thankful for local businesses and civic organizations that allow their people to deliver meals, including Liberty Mutual Insurance, 3M, Early Bird Rotary, and ENT Associates.

Along with the meal delivery, there is a bonus “safety check” provided, as the volunteer driver greets the client each day. This visit gives family members at a distance a feeling of comfort to know that their loved one has been checked on. This social interaction could be considered another form of nourishment for our recipients and for some, maybe the only interaction they have during the day.
